Effect of truncal vagotomy on acid and pepsin: response to a cholinergic drug in man.
نویسنده
چکیده
The gastric output of acid and pepsin in response to two doses of the cholinergic drug carbachol was measured before and two months after complete truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty in eight patients with duodenal ulcer. After vagotomy the basal output of acid and pepsin was reduced and there was no stimulation of secretion by a subthreshold dose of carbachol (0.5 units/kg) nor was there an increase in the response to a submaximal dose of carbachol (2.0 units/kg).Cannon's criteria for denervation supersensitivity of an organ were not obeyed with regard to acid or pepsin secretion.

Effects of fundic vagotomy and cholinergic replacement on pentagastrin dose responsive gastric acid and pepsin secretion in man.
The effects of fundic vagotomy on acid and pepsin secretion in 12 patients (10 males, two females; nine duodenal ulcer, three gastric ulcer) were studied using a pentagastrin dose response before and after Vagotomy. In the intact stage H, Cl, and pepsin output all had the same ED50, 120-127 pmol/kg/h. Vagotomy reduced basal output of acid by 78%, Cl- by 50%, and pepsin by 62%. Postvagotomy basa...
متن کاملEffect of esophageal distension on gastric secretions in rat and the possible mechanism
Introduction: The effect of esophageal distension (ED) on gastric motility has been well documented, but a few investigations have been carried out on the effect of ED on gastric secretion. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of ED on gastric acid and pepsin secretion and the mechanism(s) involved. Methods: Male adult Wistar rats (200-240 g) were anesthetized with urethane (1...
متن کاملCephalic phase of gastric secretion in healthy subjects and duodenal ulcer patients: role of vagal innervation.
In 10 healthy subjects and 25 duodenal ulcer patients, gastric acid and pepsin and serum gastrin responses to cephalic-vagal stimulation induced by modified sham-feeding (MSF) were studied before and after vagotomy and atropinisation and compared with those to maximal stimulation with pentagastrin. When the MSF-induced peak acid output was normalised as a percentage of peak response to pentagas...
متن کاملEffect of vagotomy on the gastric secretory response to intraduodenal osmotic agents in man.
The effect of intraduodenal infusion of hypertonic saline and glucose on pentagastrin-stimulated gastric secretion was investigated in 35 normal subjects, 32 duodenal ulcer patients and 32 patients after truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty. A significant gastric inhibitory response occurred after 0.51 M saline and 1-03 M glucose in the normal subjects and duodenal ulcer patients but after vagotom...
متن کاملThe effect of vagotomy on the lower part of the acid dose-response curve to pentagastrin in man.
1. The acid secretory responses to insulin of forty-seven duodenal ulcer patients after truncal vagotomy and drainage were classified according to the criteria of Hollander (1946) into positive or negative. 2. The acid response to ranges of small doses of pentagastrin was studied in these two groups. In the group with a positive acid response after insulin the dose-response pattern to pentagast...
